New South Wales Government Health
Deploying TrakGene on AWS Cloud to provide clinical access to genetics patient data across the state of NSW.
The Goal
NSW Health provides genetics services across a statewide system serving over 7 million people.
The legacy IT architecture utilised a Citrix Application Server and shared database server, which allowed all of the Genetics Services to share a single TrakGene database, thus improving data integrity and clinical efficiency.
NSW Health wanted to move the TrakGene deployment to an AWS cloud environment, to benefit from enhanced performance, auto-scaling resources and improving system resilience, whilst still retaining access from anywhere, and a single patient database to maintain data integrity and clinical efficiency.

The Solution
A project group was formed consisting of NSW Health IT, AWS Consultants, TrakGene and an End User Representative. Utilising TrakGene’s knowledge and expertise from previous cloud deployments, the AWS Consultants were able to quickly design a series of suitable AWS Cloud deployment models.
The adopted solution utilised AWS’s EC2, FSx and RDS services. TrakGene was deployed in an auto-scaling configuration to balance load based on actual usage; this reduced costs by making a much more cost effective use of resources. Redundancy and high availability was built into the deployment so that users would always have access available in the event of any outages.
The Outcome
NSW Health were able to achieve improved system performance and enhanced user access from remote locations along with cost savings associated with IT infrastructure and running costs. The time that clinician’s saved further enhanced the cost effectiveness of the solution.
